About cold sores

Cold sores are a very common infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of herpes, HSV1 and HSV2, with HSV1 being the most common cause of cold sores around the mouth. The herpes simplex virus can also cause genital herpes.

What causes cold sores?

Cold sore outbreaks can be caused by colds, flus, chest infections, sunlight, windy conditions, stress and hormonal changes.

Transmission of cold sores or HSV usually occurs through direct contact with a blister or through saliva, but can even spread when symptoms are not present.

When you do have a cold sore, it’s important to avoid sharing any personal items, especially drinking glasses and cutlery, and to abstain from close contact such as kissing or hugging others. It’s also important to note that it is possible to transmit HSV1 to the genital area through oral-genital contact.

What are the symptoms of cold sores?

Common symptoms of cold sores include painful blisters or open sores in or around the mouth. The initial onset is often characterised by a tingling, burning or itching sensation a day or two before a sore appears. You may also experience a sore throat or swollen neck glands.

What are my cold sore treatment options?

Cold sores are treated with antiviral tablets or creams which can soothe the site and shorten the duration of the cold sore by inhibiting the virus’ ability to reproduce.

There is currently no known cure or vaccination for this variation of herpes so the goal of treatment is to reduce the severity of symptoms and frequency of flares. It’s important to avoid picking or touching your cold sore, as this can cause a secondary bacterial infection or can even lead to scarring.
